Outlander – Inverness, Scotland

I’m a big fan of the Outlander TV series and the books by Diana Gabaldon. With the long mid-season break taking place, I decided to do some research into the historical locations and people in the Outlander stories.

Inverness is where Claire and Frank go for their honeymoon. It is located to the south of the Highlands, next to the Ness river.

Looking back to the time when the Outlander story takes place, there was a castle located in Inverness in 1745. The castle was occupied by Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite followers. Fearing that the castle would fall into the hands of the British, he had it destroyed.

Today, Inverness has a population of about 60,000 people and is a popular tourist location.

Falkland of Fife – Filming of Inverness in Outlander

Outlander was not filmed in Inverness however, since it is more modern looking nowadays. The village of Falkland in Fife was used to film the scenes that took place in Inverness in the series. Falkland is located to the south and is formerly known as the Parish of Kilgour and was once a royal dwelling place.

Take a walk through the village in this short video:

Scotland sure is a beautiful place and a perfect setting for the Outlander Tv series.

Curious about historical events, people and places - I love to learn and share the stories I find with others.
